Southern Miss will welcome UTEP to M.M. Roberts Stadium Saturday night for homecoming. The Golden Eagles (3-2) are coming off a big road win at UTSA, while the Miners (0-6) have yet to break into the win column.
Like most weeks this season, the dominant question is who will start at quarterback for the Golden Eagles? Kwadra Griggs was a late scratch last week with a minor hand injury. Laurel native Keon Howard started in place of Griggs and played a vital part in the win. Howard passed for 212 yards and three touchdowns in what was his first career win as the starter.
“He [Keon] played well,” Golden Eagle head coach Jay Hopson said. “I thought he ran the offense well. I thought he threw the ball extremely well. Had a couple of really nice passes. He made plays, so I was very pleased with his performance.”
Still no word on whether Howard or Griggs will start Saturday against UTEP. The Miners played perennial contender Western Kentucky and Army tough in their previous two games. They have been led by running back Quadraiz Wadley, who has rushed for 271 yards and a touchdown on 54 carries.
Kickoff of Southern Miss-UTEP is scheduled for 6 pm at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
