South Jones took Region 3-5A unbeaten, Brookhaven, to overtime last Friday night. No team in 3-5A has come closer to toppling arguably the best in the region this year.
Brookhaven went on to win at home, 43-37.
“I thought that was the best effort we’ve gotten out of our kids since I’ve been here,” said South Jones head coach Cory Reynolds. “It was a cold night, and it had been raining. I was concerned about how our kids were going to play. We’ve we arrived and got off the bus, a couple of our kids come to me and said we got this.
“And they did. I’m really happy about how they dug in and fought the whole game. We went up, we fell back down, and then we tired it up. We took one of the better teams in the district, and I believe the state [to overtime].”
Reynolds, among other coaches, praised the efforts of junior defensive end Vekelion Campbell as a reason for the team’s near upset.
“It was one of the best game’s he has played since he’s been here,” said Reynolds. “This season he has gotten better. He’s been named defensive player of the week for us several times now, and he could have gotten it several more times.”
Campbell helped disrupt Brookhaven’s run game, which was held to it’s lowest yards per carry total since its Week 1 loss to last year’s 6A runner-up Pearl.
“All week our coaches told us to come out and play every down like it’s our last,” Campbell said. “That is what we did exactly.”
The 5’10, 210 pound – as listed on MaxPreps – recorded four tackles in the contest.
Campbell is Week 11’s Sports601 Jones County Player of the Week.
