In a few weeks, South Jones softball will enter the Class 5A playoffs as a No. 1 seed. Head coach Ryan Hodge knows nothing prepares a team for the playoffs like playing quality opponents. And so they did Monday night, scoring its 11th “W” of the season.

South Jones (11-5) defeated cross-county rival Northeast Jones (12-7) 4-1 on Senior Night in Ellisville.

Mackenzie Jones and Jade Hall each had a multi-hit night for the Lady Braves, while Madison Jones and Faith Bufkin added solo hits to the mix. Jones second hit broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Hall who recorded her first hit of the night earlier in the inning.

Back-to-back errors in the field by Northeast Jones in the sixth, along with two walks later in the inning, allowed South Jones to add two runs to its lead. It was also an error in the field by NEJ that allowed South Jones’ first run of the game. The fielding error was linked to Jones’ first single of the game and allowed her to advance to third. Macey Blancett, who doubled earlier in the inning, scored on the play.

The Lady Tigers threatened in the top of the seventh by advancing two runners in scoring position, but a groundout with two already on the board ended things and gave the Lady Braves their 11th win this season to date.

Grace Stringer earned the win on the rubber. The senior pitcher on Senior Night finished with eight strikeouts and allowed just three hits.

Courtney Booth led NEJ at the plate with a pair of singles.

South Jones faces another tough opponent Tuesday night. The Lady Braves will face the defending 2A champs Taylorsville (16-1) on the road.

NEJ faces Quitman in a Region 5-4A contest Tuesday night as well.
