Southern Miss finished off spring football with its Black and Gold Spring Game Saturday afternoon at M.M. Roberts Stadium. The Gold squad, led by quarterbacks Keon Howard (Laurel) and Carter Hankins (FCAHS), built a 20-0 halftime lead and went on to win, 20-15.

“I think it was fun. It was a good game,” Southern Miss head coach Jay Hopson said. “I felt like there was a lot of competition. It looked like it could have been a runaway at first with the Gold team jumping out quick.”

The first half scoring for Gold consisted of a pair of field goals from Parker Shaunfield, a two-yard touchdown run from T’Rod Daniels and a Hankins-Quez Watkins connection for six points.

“Coming into the spring game, us against our own, you gotta bring some energy to the sideline and on the field,” said Keon Koward, who finished with 124 passing yards. “Today was just a good day to come out here and make sure everyone has the same positive energy and make sure we push each other and build each other up going forward.”

In the second half, the Black squad, led by quarterbacks Marcelo Rodriguez and Jack Abraham, answered with a scoring run. A touchdown pass from Rodriguez to Antawyn Fludd and a score from running back Steven Anderson made it 20-15. Abraham, a transfer from Northwest Mississippi Community College, finished with a team-high 103 passing yards.

Defensively, Gold locked down late to preserve the win.

“I thought we started off excited, high motored,” Gold defensive back Tyler Barnes said. “We were flying around the first half, making plays and communicating real well, but in the second half we should’ve kept that same energy. As a unit though I felt like we did a good job communicating.”

Hopson saw it as a productive day for both sides.

“I felt we got most of everything in that we wanted to get in, schematically, and that’s a plus,” said Hopson, who is entering his third year with the team. “You just want to go into August with everything installed. I felt like we’ve created some good competition at some critical spots. It’ll be fun to watch these guys go through it in August.”

Southern Miss will open the 2018 season on Sept. 1 at home against Jackson State.
