Jordan Rogers knew when the chance presented itself; South Jones couldn’t afford to repeat last Friday’s mistakes. Leaving 12 on base in Game 1 of the MHSAA Class 5A first-round playoff series three night’s ago was fresh on minds of Rogers and company.

Ben Welch, Max Sharp and Ricky Boleware made sure to make solid contact with runners in scoring position Monday night at home in Game 3. It led to a 5-1 South Jones victory.

South Jones wins its first-round playoff series over Stone High School with the win.

Boleware led the Braves at the plate with two hits, one of which put South Jones on top 5-0 late in the fourth inning. The seniors single scored Chad Moses who reached third base on a walk, sacrifice bunt by Mason Diers and a groundout off the bat of Byrson Sumrall.

Sharp led in RBI with two. His two-out single back in the third inning with runners in scoring position was part of South Jones’ four-run stanza. Contact off the bat of Ben Welch, also with two outs, in the third scored South’s first two runs of the inning and subsequently the game.

Tyler Ducksworth, Andrew Howard and John Mitchell also had hits in the win.

On the mound, Mitchell collected his fourth win of the year. The senior tossed the entire game, allowing one run (not earned) on four hits. His strikeout total finished in double-digits with 10.

Rogers said Mitchell and his team’s defense kept the game in check with solid play in the field.

Stone High starter Tyler Cobb took the loss. He lasted just 2.2 innings while allowing four runs – none earned – on three hits and two walks.

South Jones improves to 14-10 on the season and will play Natchez Friday night on the road in Game 1 of round two.

Stone High closes out its season with a 9-15 record.
