Here are your Jones County Week 7 predictions as picked by James Pugh.
Brookhaven at Laurel
For about a half vs. South Jones last Friday night, Laurel looked vulnerable. The Tornadoes trailed South Jones at the half, 17-13, despite some serious mistakes made by the Braves on offense and special teams.
Laurel’s near shutout in the second half helped the Tornadoes avoid embarrassment.
But now Brookhaven is in town, and though the Panthers aren’t the team they were a year ago, they’re still the defending Region 3-5A champs. A first-half blunder would not be easily corrected for Laurel if the same were to happen again this week.
Prediction: Brookhaven 24, Laurel 21.
South Jones at Forest Hill
South Jones shocked a lot of people last Friday night in its Region 3-5A opener vs. Laurel.
No, the Braves didn’t beat the Tornadoes, they lost, 42-20. They did, however, have the lead at the end of the first half, 17-13, and that’s enough to turn some major heads.
South Jones was only predicted to win two games this year, and boy was we wrong. They might win No. 4 this week if the Braves can manage to play a bit more error-free football than last week.
Prediction: South Jones 17, Forest Hill 13.
West Jones at Natchez
West Jones has a legitimate shot at winning this year’s Region 3-5A title. And so they started region play last Friday night much like it did last year, shutting out Forest Hill. This time only by a score of 21-0, but I’m sure Pierson called off the dogs, or Mustangs in this instance, in the second half.
After last years’ Region 3-5A shutout win over Forest Hill, 26-0, the Mustangs pounded Natchez the following week, 46-15.
We should expect something similar this time around.
Prediction: West Jones 35, Natchez 6.
Northeast Lauderdale at Northeast Jones
Senior quarterback Javier “Fafa” Magee should be back for Northeast Jones as they begin Region 5-4A action this week in The Jungle. Head coach Keith Braddock said Fafa Magee would not be 100 percent, but he’s well enough to play after severely spraining his ankle several weeks ago.
The Tigers are winless (0-5), but their first-half schedule of non-division opponents was brutal. After a bye week to recharge and recuperate, I feel like there’s an upset in the making and the Tigers earned win No. 1 on the season.
Prediction: Northeast Jones 33, Northeast Lauderdale 28.
