Here are your Jones County Week 8 predictions as picked by James Pugh.
Laurel at Wingfield
Laurel will have a quick turn around in Week 7.
After shutting out the Region 3-5A reigning champs (Brookhaven) Friday night at R. H. Watkins Stadium, Laurel returns to action Thursday night vs. Wingfield. The turn around will not be much of a problem considering Wingfield is 0-6 on the season thus far.
Prediction: Laurel 35, Wingfield 6.
Natchez at South Jones
South Jones may be the surprise of the year in our Sports601 coverage area. Losing nearly 20 seniors to graduation and returning just two starters on offense and defense, South Jones is doing significantly better than many expected. Forest Hill didn’t pose much of a threat last week as the Braves picked up their first Region 3-5A win, 40-8, over the Patriots.
Natchez comes to town this week and it’s a must win on The Reservation if South Jones has any hopes of being a playoff team for the second year in a row. Natchez, North Pike and South Jones sit on the bubble of Region 3-5A’s fourth seed as Laurel, West Jones and Brookhaven will likely take the top three spots if history is any indication. Only one will make it.
Prediction: South Jones 21, Natchez 17.
North Pike at West Jones
West Jones and Laurel are the two unbeaten’s left in Region 3-5A two weeks in. I doubt that will change this week.
The last two Region 3-5A games that have involved West Jones go something like this: West Jones scores all of its points in the first half and then cruises to a shutout victory in the second half. Now, who is to say West Jones can’t follow suit with a third-of-a-kind.
Prediction: West Jones 28, North Pike 0.
Northeast Jones at West Lauderdale
The Tigers can’t seem to catch a break.
Northeast Jones dropped its sixth straight game in as many tries last week, falling to Northeast Lauderdale 27-7 in both team’s Region 5-4A opener.
Friday night they travel to West Lauderdale who is a tougher opponent than Northeast Lauderdale. Or so the records suggest. Ugly might hang around for another week unfortunately for Northeast Jones.
West Lauderdale has outscored its opponents so far this season, 215-67.
Prediction: West Lauderdale 35, Northeast Jones 3.
