Here are your Jones County Week 9 predictions as picked by James Pugh.
West Jones at Laurel
This game is likely to decided Region 3-5A.
Laurel’s 20-0 shutout win over Brookhaven in Week 7 answered a lot of questions surrounding how the region would play out in 2018. With last year’s Region 3-5A winner defeated, two teams remain unbeaten in the region – Laurel and West Jones.
Laurel has arguably the best offense in Region 3-5A, while West Jones has the best defense beyond any doubt. An offense averaging 37 points a game in 3-5A faces a defense who has yet to give up a point in all three games thus far. This one is hard to pick.
Prediction: Laurel 17, West Jones 14.
South Jones at North Pike
Things went sour fast on the Reservation last week.
Up 24-12 with several minutes remaining in the game, South Jones gave up 15 unanswered points to lose its more important Region 3-5A game to date. The loss now means South Jones will have to not only beat North Pike and Wingfield, but also pull off an upset over West Jones or Brookhaven for a shot at the playoffs. Brookhaven will be the likely of the two.
However, nothing stays in play without a win over North Pike.
Prediction: South Jones 35, North Pike 21.
Northeast Jones at Quitman
In the second half of games this year, things have not gone in the Tigers favor.
Northeast Jones has stayed within reach in both of its Region 5-4A games so far. Then comes the second half. That’s probably the way things will go this week vs. Quitman.
Prediction: Quitman 32, Northeast Jones 14.
