With a 54-51 overtime loss to Pillow Academy in the opening round of the MAIS Overall Basketball Tournament on Tuesday, the 2018-2019 season came to a close for the Lamar Christian Lady Lions, the state champions of Class AA. 

Behind seven straight points from Rachael Pitts, the Lady Lions built a 36-29 lead early in the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s game, but Pillow Academy responded with a 13-0 scoring run to seize a six-point lead with two and a half minutes to play. 

With 56 seconds left in regulation, the Lady Lions retook the lead, 44-42, as Catherine Hannabass converted a three-point play, capping off an 8-0 run for Lamar Christian. Thirty seconds later, the Lady Mustangs knocked down two free throws to tie it and send the game into overtime. 

The Lady Lions opened the extra period with back-to-back baskets from Hannabass, who finished with a game-high 20 points. Two lead changes ensued. For the second, Rebekah Engle drained a three-pointer to put Lamar Christian up 51-49 with about a minute left. Not to be outdone, the Lady Mustangs closed out the overtime period with a 5-0 run to earn the win and advance to the second round of the tournament. 

Pitts poured in 13 points and Engle added nine for the Lady Lions, who finish the season 32-4.
