The Mize Lady Bulldogs (17-1) have been red hot from start to finish in the 2019 softball season. Thursday evening Coach Davin Burch’s team defeated Pisgah and secured the Region 6-2A crown with a perfect 7-0 record against district opponents. A very key component for the Lady Bulldogs’ success has been Cora Robinson, whose efforts have earned her the award of being named Sports601 Powerade Softball Player of the Month (March).

Robinson is playing her first season with the Lady Bulldogs after transferring from Magee, though she certainly strikes none as a new kid on the block. Through 18 contests, the junior has a .422 batting average with a team-high 26 runs batted in and two home runs. Her production is not limited to just the plate, however. Robinson also boasts a 13-1 record as a starting pitcher with a 0.78 earned runs average and 93 strikeouts through more than 71 innings of work.

“This is my first year with her since she transferred in,” said Burch, “but she’s progressed a lot even since the first game against Seminary. She’s constantly improved on hitting her spots. She’s been great for us. She’s done everything we’ve asked, and that’s all you can hope for. I’m just proud of her.”

When asked which is most fun for her—dominating on the mound or having a great hitting performance—Robinson answered, “Maybe having a great game at the plate is a little more satisfying.” After six years of pitching, she believes herself to be a bit more polished in that area of the game, whereas her results on offense have taken a lot of hard work to produce.

With one game remaining on their regular season schedule before the arrival of playoffs, Coach Burch says he knows Robinson and her teammates are not content to dwell on the success they have enjoyed so far. They believe their best softball is still ahead of them.

“We aren’t looking for any huge changes. We’d kind of like to stay with where we’re at,” said Burch. “But our thing is just minimizing mental mistakes. If we can do that, the sky is the limit for this team.”
