Another senior under Sherri Cooley is headed to the next level. South Jones girls basketball standout Nikia Jones signed her LOI with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College inside the South Jones Media Center on Monday.
“I’m happy for Nikia,” said head coach Sherri Cooley. “I’ve coached her for four years and in every practice and every game she always gives 100 percent. She’s a hard worker with a great attitude and I’m excited that she gets an opportunity at the next level.”
Jones only averaged 4.4 points per game during the 2018-2019 season, but was a force offensively and defensively for the Lady Braves at post. She finished the season with 127 rebounds.
It was her effort on the court that grabbed the attention of MGCCC.
“Gulf Coast came to some of our games and practices to see Kelsey [Jackson],” Cooley said. “And while the watched Kelsey, they noticed Nikia. They saw her size and believes she can come in and be an impact.”
Not only did Jones impress MGCCC by her effort on the court, she also impressed recruiters by her attitude and willingness to be coached.
“They saw how hard she worked and how good she was at the post,” added Cooley. “And they liked her. Nikia is a physical player and plays and defends the post very well. And she has great mobility for a girl her size. She can really run the floor.”
Jones makes the third Lady Brave to sign a basketball scholarship out of the 2018-2019 senior class.
“All four of my seniors signed scholarships,” mentioned Cooley. “Three signed basketball scholarships and one signed a Choral Scholarship at Jones. I am extremely proud of my seniors.”
